Vann Nath, Pray for Peace

Vann Nath se porte plutôt bien, même s'il n'est pas encore en mesure de faire des efforts physiques prolongés. Il peint 2 à 3 fois par semaine, mais il a du mal à tenir assis très longtemps comme c'était le cas auparavant, il doit donc fréquemment s'allonger dans la journée. Il continue de faire des dialyses 1 à 2 fois par semaine. Lorsqu'il est en forme, il n'en fait qu'une, il reste toutefois sous étroite surveillance médicale. Une séance de dialyse lui revient à 70 USD, l'injection d'EPO à 30 USD, soit 100 USD au total. À raison de 7 séances par mois, il dépense donc 700 USD pour ses dialyses.

Ces derniers jours ont surtout été marqués par la fête de Pchum Ben (fête des morts), Phnom Penh est désert, les habitants sont partis en province.

Le mardi de la semaine dernière, Vann Nath et Chum Mey se sont recueillis au Musée de Tuol Sleng, où une grande cérémonie religieuse a eu lieu. Elle a compté environ 200 participants, dont une trentaine de bonzes, et majoritairement des officiels, comme le ministre de la Culture, M. Him Chhem, et a duré un peu plus de trois heures.

Vann Nath renouvelle ses remerciements pour l'attention que vous lui portez. Un ami retourne au Cambodge à la fin du mois. Nous en profiterons pour lui confier les donations. Merci à vous tous !


[EN] Vann Nath is feeling better, despite not being able to make prolonged efforts yet. He paints 2 or 3 times a week, but he cannot stay seated for as long as he used to, so he has to lie down several times a day. He still undergoes dialysis once or twice a week. When he is doing well, he does dialysis only once weekly, however, he is still closely looked after. One dialysis session costs about 70 USD, and an EPO shot (to maintain a stable hematocrit) costs 30 USD, making the entire session cost 100 USD. Since he needs at least 7 sessions a month, his medical expenses for dialysis amount to at least 700 USD.

Lately, people have been celebrating Pchum Ben (celebration of the dead) throughout Cambodia. Phnom Penh is empty as its inhabitants have left for the provinces.

During a large religious ceremony held last Tuesday at Tuol Sleng Museum,Vann Nath and Chum Mey prayed in remembrance of the Khmer Rouge victims. There were approximately 200 people present, among whom, there were around thirty monks and a majority of officials, including the minister of Culture, Mr. Him Chhem. The ceremony lasted three and a half hours.

Vann Nath, en bien meilleure forme, a repris les pinceaux. Il peint actuellement un épisode de son incarcération au S21, qui montre un garde lavant les prisonniers au tuyau d'arrosage. Un garde aspergeait tous les prisonniers de la salle à partir du seuil de la porte, une fois tous les quatre jours. L'hygiène était déplorable, les prisonniers attrapaient la gale.
Vann Nath fait également des esquisses pour un projet d'espace de recueil en l'honneur des victimes du S21, en collaboration avec l'association Ksem Ksan.

[EN] Back to painting

Vann Nath is now in much better shape and is back to painting. He is currently painting an S21 scene, depicting a guard hosing down prisoners. Every four days, while standing in the doorway of the room where all the prisoners were detained, a guard would spray them with a hose. Hygiene was appalling and prisoners were covered in scabies.  
Vann Nath is also sketching for a project, in collaboration with the Ksem Ksan association, which entails creating a memorial to pay respect to the S21 victims.

Réaction de Vann Nath au sujet de l'actualité de Duch

Vann Nath se sent beaucoup mieux. Il parle avec beaucoup plus de rythme, de vivacité et d'aisance que la fois précédente où je l'ai eu au téléphone. Son poids continue de se rapprocher de son niveau habituel.

Vann Nath, finalement, se satisfait de la sentence de Duch. Selon lui, l'essentiel est que Duch ait été reconnu coupable pour les crimes qu'il a commis, de manière claire et officielle aux yeux des cambodgiens et du monde. De toute façon, aucune peine ne peut être à la hauteur des crimes commis, de la souffrance des victimes.
Bien que surpris par le fait que Duch fasse appel de sa condamnation, Vann Nath ne s'en inquiète pas pour autant. Il ne pense pas que sa peine sera diminuée.
Quant au fait que le parquet a décidé de faire appel pour sanctionner Duch plus durement, Vann Nath préférerait que l'énergie et les fonds soient consacrés au deuxième procès, car il est important que le tribunal aille à son terme pour qu'une décision puisse être rendue à temps pour les cambodgiens, alors que les 4 prévenus sont âgés et en mauvaise santé.

Nous avons également parlé du projet d'ouvrage sur l'ensemble de ses peintures, que je vous détaillerai dans un prochain article.

Vann Nath a bien reçu notre dernière donation de 600 EUR, et remercie tous les donateurs très sincèrement.

[EN] Vann Nath reacts to the last news concerning Duch

Vann Nath is getting a lot better. He now speaks at a much better pace compared to the last time I spoke to him. His weight keeps getting closer to its normal state.

Vann Nath is eventually satisfied with the sentence given to Duch. For him, the fact that Duch has clearly and officially been sentenced for the crimes he was held responsible, at the sight of Khmer people and the world, is the only thing that matters. Anyway, there would not be any appropriate sentence, in regard of the gravity of his crimes and the victims' suffering.
He's not worrying about Duch appealing his sentence as he thinks that there is no way that it could somehow be lessened.
Concerning the fact that the prosecuting committee has decided to appeal in order to take harder sanctions against Duch, Vann Nath would prefer the energy and the funding to be focused on the second trial involving the four other former Khmer Rouge leaders.  Indeed, all of them are old and unhealthy, and it is important for all Cambodian people, to judge them in time, before they pass away.

We have also spoken on a book project that would include all the paintings of Vann Nath, which I will explain in more details in a following post.

There are just two little mistakes in the interview I wish to point out:
– Vann Nath is now 64 years old.
– According to Vann Nath, there were not two but seven survivors from S21. Today, only three of them (including Vann Nath) are still alive.

Réaction à la sentence de Duch

[FR] Vann Nath accueille la sentence de Duch comme un moindre mal. Il se dit conscient que la sanction (au final 19 ans de prison) puisse paraître légère par rapport aux crimes commis — Duch est officiellement responsable de plus de 12 000 victimes ; un nombre sans doute bien inférieur à la réalité — néanmoins, il ne se déclare qu'à moitié surpris, vu que le procureur n'avait requis que 40 ans à l'encontre de l'accusé. Il s'agit d'un premier pas hésitant pour la justice, que beaucoup jugent insuffisant, mais un premier pas tout de même.
Quant au fait que Duch ait décidé de faire appel de sa condamnation, Vann Nath n'a pas de mots pour exprimer son indignation. Si la justice décide de l'appeler à témoigner une nouvelle fois, il le fera sans hésiter.
J'ai servi d'interprète pour une interview de Vann Nath qui devrait paraître dans le magazine VSD de la semaine prochaine.

[EN] Vann Nath welcomes the sentence of Duch by the ECCC as a lesser evil. He is aware that the sentence (in the end, 19 years in jail) may appear light in comparison to his crimes – Duch is officially held responsible for the death of at least 12 000 victims; though this number is probably less than in reality — however he is only half surprised at this, considering that the prosecutor had only requested 40 years in jail. It is an hesitating first step towards justice, even though many people consider it as insufficient, but it is still a first step.
Concerning the fact that Duch appeals against the decision, Vann Nath has no word to express his indignation. If justice decides to call him one more time as a witness, he will do it with no hesitation.
I served as an interpreter for an interview of Vann Nath that should be published in VSD magazine (France) next week.

[FR] Vann Nath va de mieux en mieux, il a un meilleur appétit et commence à regagner du poids (son épisode d'avril dernier lui avait fait perdre plus d'une quinzaine de kilos). Son bras gauche n'est quasiment plus douloureux. Il est en attente, tout comme nous, de la décision du tribunal concernant Duch, qui devrait tomber demain. Il a prévu de s'y rendre avec quelques journalistes demain tôt le matin. Il a bon espoir que Duch n'obtienne pas sa demande de remise en liberté. Selon lui, Duch a mené son procès à la baguette depuis le début et n'était pas sincère au moment de ses excuses vis-à-vis des victimes.

[EN] Vann Nath is getting better and better, he's eating a lot more and is gaining some weight back (he had lost over than 15 kg because of the disease). The pain in his left arm has almost disappeared.
Like a lot of us, he's waiting to see what the tribunal will decide tomorrow concerning Duch. He has planned to go and assist the decision at Kombol tommorow with some journalists. Vann Nath hopes Duch will not obtain his freedom back. He thinks Duch was not sincere when he apologized to the victims.
